Part 2: Why Do Many Christians Worship on Sunday not the Saturday?

Examining the Bible and Tradition

Previously, we learned that the Sabbath is the holy day established by God in the Bible and that it corresponds to Saturday today. This naturally raises an important question: If the biblical Sabbath is Saturday, why do most Christians worship on Sunday today? To answer this question, we need to examine both what the Bible teaches and how church history developed.

Does the Bible Say That the Sabbath Was Changed?

Nowhere in the Bible does God abolish the seventh-day Sabbath or change it to the first day of the week, Sunday. In the Fourth Commandment, God says, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy” Exodus 20:8–11. Jesus also declared that He did not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it Matthew 5:17–19.

Jesus worshiped in the synagogue on the Sabbath according to His custom Luke 4:16, and after His ascension, His disciples continued to observe the Sabbath. Likewise, the apostle Paul preached the gospel on the Sabbath in many cities, and both Jews and Gentiles gathered on that day to hear the word of God Acts 13:42–44; 17:2; 18:4.

The New Testament records that Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week, Sunday Mark 16:9. However, it never states that God changed the day of worship to commemorate His resurrection. Christians may celebrate Christ’s resurrection on Resurrection day, but to remember God’s power as the Creator and receive the blessings of the Sabbath, we should observe the seventh day, Saturday, as the Bible teaches.

How Did Sunday Worship Begin?

The earliest Christians continued to worship God on the Sabbath for many years. As time passed, however, efforts were made to distinguish Christians from the Jews, and the culture and political circumstances of the Roman Empire gradually influenced Christian worship practices.

In A.D. 321, the Roman Emperor Constantine issued a decree declaring Sunday, the “Day of the Sun,” to be an official day of rest. Over time, various church councils contributed to the widespread acceptance of Sunday worship, and eventually it became an established tradition in many churches.

These developments took place throughout church history. They were not the result of a biblical command changing the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday.

Should We Follow the Bible or Tradition?

Jesus warned against allowing human traditions to replace God’s commandments. He said, “Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition” Mark 7:13, rebuking those who placed human traditions above the will of God.

The standard of Christian faith should be the Scriptures rather than customs or traditions that change over time. Even if a practice has been followed for many centuries and accepted by many people, we should humbly reexamine it in the light of God’s Word if it differs from what the Bible teaches. Jesus also declared, “In vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men” Matthew 15:9, warning that worship based on human commandments rather than God’s instruction is empty.

Remember the Day That God Made Holy

From the time of creation, God blessed the seventh day and set it apart as holy. As long as the work of creation remains unchanged, the blessed seventh-day Sabbath cannot become the first day of the week, Sunday. Jesus and the apostles faithfully observed the seventh-day Sabbath, and nowhere does the Bible teach that this holy day was changed to another day.

Therefore, we should make God’s Word—not human tradition—the foundation of our faith. By remembering the Sabbath that God made holy and faithfully keeping it according to His will, we come to know our Creator more deeply, strengthen our relationship with Him, and receive the true peace and abundant blessings He has promised.

The Sabbath is a law of God established by Elohim, God the Creator.
Those who do not keep the Sabbath are not God's people and cannot enter the Kingdom of God.
    Many Christians worship on Sunday.
Sunday worship is not found in the Bible; a look at church history reveals that it is a man-made custom rooted in sun-god worship.
As children of God, let us keep the Sabbath on Saturday.

God made the seventh-day Sabbath holy from creation, and by keeping it according to His Word, we receive His peace and blessings.

The Sabbath day is a day of God and God made it holy. So we should keep the worship on Saturday.

Jesus taught, "My sheep hear my voice," and instructed that the Sabbath must be kept until the end of the age. Because the members of the World Mission Society Church of God deeply value the words of God as testified in the Bible, the members of WMSCOG are the only ones today who truly keep the Sabbath, just as the early Church did.

The Bible clearly shows that the Sabbath is Saturday. Many people continue to keep Sunday because of long-standing traditions and customs, but I am truly thankful to keep the biblical Sabbath. As God’s people, let’s keep the Sabbath with gratitude, confidence, and pride, cherishing this precious blessing that Father Ahnsahnghong and God the Mother have given us.

Jesus said that He is the Lord of the Sabbath (Mt 12:8) and set an example for us by keeping it. His disciples also kept the Sabbath by following His example. If we desire to follow Jesus and His teachings, what should we do? The Bible contains no record of Jesus or His disciples worshiping on Sunday. Let us keep the Sabbath holy and receive the blessings that God has promised.
